Single mother: an au pair is a gift!

Finding help as a single mother

I’m Marit, 45 years old and mother of two wonderful children. As a single mother, it can sometimes be challenging to balance the care of my children with my work, especially when I faced health problems. A friend suggested considering an au pair, something I was unfamiliar with at the time but which she had a positive experience with.

Great experience with Au Pair Holland

From our first contact with Au Pair Holland, I received clear communication and valuable support. They made the entire process simple and smooth. The team provided excellent guidance throughout the placement process, understanding my specific needs and what type of au pair would fit well with my family. This personal approach was immensely helpful, and the support that Au Pair Holland provides to au pairs is also excellent.

Meet Margot – our perfect match

When I first met Margot, our au pair, I immediately felt a connection. Her kindness, intelligence, and warm character were evident during our initial online conversation. I knew straight away that she would be a great fit for our family. Margot, a 19-year-old French au pair, brought a vibrant energy to our home. Having grown up in a family with two younger sisters, she understood family dynamics well. Her command of English was not perfect initially but improved significantly throughout the programme. Due to her active lifestyle, she integrated well into our family, and the children were always excited to spend time with her.

A new balance in our lives

Margot’s arrival has transformed our lives! Thanks to her help, I can fully concentrate on my work and medical appointments. It’s comforting and reassuring to know that the children are in good hands when I’m not there; that feeling is priceless. Margot’s contribution to our family goes beyond just childcare. She plays with the children, helps them with reading, engages in craft activities with them, and even tries to teach them a few French words.

Margot is their big sister

By now, Margot has truly become part of our family and a big sister to my children. The bond they share is heartwarming, and I know my children will miss her terribly when she leaves. Margot's French background has enriched our lives culturally, from new dishes to teaching the children a different language. Her presence has unintentionally taught us much more about France and its culture than she probably realises.

Lovely memories

The most beautiful or enjoyable memory? That’s a tough choice. I think Margot will generally leave a wonderful memory with me and my family. The moment she played the Easter Bunny or the family trip to Lisbon are moments I won’t soon forget. I’m also sure that we’ll visit her in France once she returns home.

Unsure about having an au pair? Just go for it!

I find it amusing that people often think an au pair is for the 'rich' or that I get questioned whether I meet the requirements as a single mother. I feel that many people are still unfamiliar with the programme, while it offers so much goodness. Everyone I speak to about Margot notices how enthusiastic I am, and of course, I wish the same for every other family. As a single mother, I would love to share my enthusiasm for having an au pair with other single parents. I’d shout it from the rooftops if I could! It has brought me so much joy, and for that, I am incredibly grateful to Au Pair Holland.
