What is an au pair?

    What is an au pair?

When you choose an au pair, you experience both flexible and affordable care for your children. It is the ideal solution to bring more balance to your daily life and spend more quality time with your children.

An au pair lives with your family and truly becomes a part of your household, you gain an extra family member! This family member, your au pair, will bring many benefits and extra adventures for the children! It is reassuring to know that your children are well cared for in their familiar environment, and an au pair gets to know your children well and can respond to their needs and wishes. Is your daughter a fan of Kinderen voor Kinderen? Your au pair will gladly dance along! The flexibility allows you to carve out extra time for yourself, such as an evening of sports or a well-deserved date night. Additionally, an au pair works according to a schedule you set, not the regular hours of childcare facilities.

With an au pair, you bring the world into your home, and your children will learn more about other cultures and languages. Your au pair can also assist with light household tasks and prepare healthy snacks for the children, giving you more time for other matters. An au pair provides everything you need!

The au pair program is a fantastic way to have a reliable, enthusiastic, and dedicated caregiver. All our au pairs undergo a screening process by our international partners. The candidates are thoroughly assessed for their suitability to become an au pair and must provide various documents. All au pairs presented to you have completed the screening and have been evaluated by our partner. You will receive the details only of those au pairs whom we believe will fit well with your family. The au pair profile includes photos, an introduction letter, and references. All au pairs have submitted a medical check-up and a certificate of good conduct to our partner. Many of our au pairs also have a driving licence.

In return for childcare of up to 30 hours per week, an au pair receives room and board with your family, including 3 meals a day, 7 days a week, and monthly pocket money.

Benefits of an au pair

For your au pair, we offer many benefits and support, including:
  • Part of the family: The opportunity to fully integrate into a Dutch host family, experience Dutch culture, and become a "big sister or brother" within the family.
  • Room and board: Free room and board in a comfortable, furnished bedroom in the host family's home.
  • Pocket money: Monthly pocket money to cover personal expenses.
  • Insurance and extras: Travel and health insurance, compensation for the airfare, an OV Weekend Vrij subscription, a museum card, and a phone subscription, allowing the au pair to enjoy the cultural exchange without worries.
  • Days off: Two days off per week, giving the au pair ample time to explore the Netherlands and make new friends.
  • Support: Guidance, support, and training from the host family and Au Pair Holland to ensure a successful au pair experience.
  • Arrival: The host family will pick up the au pair from the airport.
  • Responsibilities: No full responsibility for children younger than 1 year, so the au pair's focus is mainly on childcare for older children.
  • No night responsibilities: Ensuring the au pair gets the necessary rest and relaxation to care for the children during the day.
  • Childcare as the focus: The au pair's duties should be focused on childcare. They may help with light household chores, limited to a maximum of 2 hours per day.
With specific arrangements regarding the recognised au pair program, the above items are intended to make the cultural exchange program as comfortable as possible for both the au pair and the host family. A happy au pair creates a positive atmosphere within the family and provides good and flexible care for the children.
